Automotive media specialist, social media creator and administrator, videographer, photographer and editor. Oh, and I ride mountain bikes.

The festive season…

Manic – that’s a way to describe the last few weeks. Jobs for a host of clients, including Outdoor, GoAuto, Top Gear, Motor, Evo and others in places as varied as Goulburn, Tasmania, Spain and Thredbo kept me absolutely on the limiter right up to the beginning of this week.

Corralling two awesome cars and one Stig for a Top Gear vid at Goulburn proved awesome fun; a huge thanks to my good friend John Boston at for his help with that one!

Next was a quick dash to Tassie to drive a range of Renault Sports. Mmm, Sports… You’ll see that story in the next issue of Evo Australia magazine.

Then a dash to Thredbo, NSW, to climb to the top of Australia – before riding back down! A great weekend with the crew from Thredbo Resort and ace shooter Mark Watson of Incite Images for Australian Geographic/Outdoor magazine.

Finally, a mad-cap dash to Valencia, Spain, to drive Volkswagen’s new Polo GTI for a variety of Aussie auto outlets, including Top Gear and GoAuto. We were on the ground in Spain for exactly 25 hours…

Then home, a quick day at the V8 Supercar races with Volvo, a dash to Melbourne to drive a Ford Kuga, and finally I’m looking down the barrel of my last official gig for 2014 – a drive of Mitsubishi’s Safari Rally Outlander PHEV.

It’s been crazy, it’s been tough in spots, but it’s been rewarding and exciting. Ain’t no one else in charge of 032Media’s destiny, and I’m genuinely thrilled at the outcomes we’re achieving. There’s loads more to come, though – this game is all about the hustle!

Keeping busy

I’m pleased to say I can slow down for at least two days this month. Maybe. With the Great Cycle Challenge happening all through October, things were getting pretty dern crazy there for a while. All for a bloody good cause, though! As I write this, the charity has raised more than $1 million for kid’s cancer research, and pretty much all of it goes to where it needs to. Love your work, team!

Work-wise, 032Media is keeping me busy! Online stuff for Top Gear Australia, mag features for MOTOR, AG/Outdoor, Top Gear and Bike, online news and reviews for GoAuto… it’s coming thick and fast!

Getting used to freelance life is interesting – today, for example, has been a 17-hour epic, but next week is looking decidedly light-on. A good chance to rip everything out of the garage and redesign it with a video-ready mechanic’s area, a spot for a photo backdrop and a new way of stashing the bike collection, maybe?

More to come soon, with new clients on the go and more new to reveal!

The Great Cycle Challenge – riding for the best cause of all

Over the month of October, more than fifty Australian kids will be diagnosed with some form of cancer. We’ll lose about 12. Awful stats… but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Research has given cancer kids a better-than-80% chance of survival in the modern age, and the oncology profession’s leading lights suggest that the end of childhood cancer is closer than we think.

The least I can do, as the father of a thriving childhood cancer survivor, is join the gang at the Great Cycle Challenge and raise valuable funds for this research to continue.

I’ve nominated to ride 1500km over the month and to personally raise $1500 – in its first year, the Great Cycle Challenge raised over $1 million, and there’s already $140,000 in the kitty for 2014!

Thank you.

Malaysia bound!

My favourite kind of packing… race boots and cameras! The Michelin Experience trip is go, and I’m off late Sunday night.  Colour me excited… any day you can spend at a race track is a good one, and even more so if it’s a pukka F1 track.

I’ve actually driven on the track before – ironically on a Pirelli day back in 2000. I’ve still got stories from that day, too. The best one involves a car-load of wayward Chinese journos in a Camry dropping it right in front of me (and my terrified passenger) on the fastest corner on the track. Having survived that scare, the lads proceeded to bin it properly on the very next lap…

Another big week here at 032Media, signing up a (super secret!) client for a run of really interesting and challenging work, and there’s another couple of opportunities to finalise when I get back from Malaysia next week.

I’m really amazed and humbled by the messages of support and assistance from people I’ve known for a long time – not least the loving support here at home! Thank you all! Have a great weekend, everyone./Robbo

Opinion: Sex at the 600 – so what’s new?

Aaahh, Queensland’s Gold Coast – the epicurean and cultural hub of the north, where Monaco meets Tuscany via Cologne in a gentle fusion of fashion and urbane sophistication.

Well, okay, maybe not.

V8 Supercars has just released a promo edit for this October’s Gold Coast 600, which features birds, boobs, beer, booze and beaches in high rotation. Cue an instant tut-tut response in the cauldron of social media, with naysayers decrying the debasement of it all.

Now, I’ve covered a few GC600s, and if ever there’s a case for not reinventing the wheel, this is totally it. Battling through hordes of shirtless/topless, tanned, well-drunk revellers of both sexes makes for a pretty tiring work weekend, but I tell you what… everyone’s having an awesome time.

There’s been as much action up in the balconies overlooking the circuit over the years as there has been on the track – and not only from the fans. A reasonably prominent GT racer once confided in me that what he would have spent on brake pads and tyres for a race weekend kept him and four mates up to their necks in booze, food and, erm, entertainment for the entire race week…

Judging by the responses on the vid itself, the fan base is okay with it. V8 Supercars has its issues and its detractors at the moment, but it’s absolutely right in promoting the party aspect of the Goldie as hard as it can. It’s an expensive race to run, and it needs thongs through the gates to keep its sponsors coming back.

The 600 is a three-day street party for the young and inebriated, and it always has been. It’s hot, it’s humid, the beer flows freely and the Gold Coast doesn’t have the reputation as Australia’s premier party town for nothing. If that ain’t your bag, it’s a race to stay away from. If you haven’t experienced it, though, it’s definitely an eye-opener…

The jobs are piling up…

Great news – we’ve hit the ground running and signed up a few clients in our first couple of weeks, with plenty of cool assignments already in the books.

We’ll be heading to Malaysia in a couple of weeks to try out the new F4 category and punting a punnet of Porsches around some sensational local roads in mid-August, not to mention some more elementary but no less important editorial assignments we’ve got on the books.

Huge thanks to everyone who’s offered their support – it means a lot!
